root cuttings
Neil Barraclough:
I had to trim the roots of the quince rootstocks to get them in the pots and if they get enough TLC the root pieces should grow into new rootstocks if I plant them with the minimum amount showing. Pears, apples and cherries will also grow easily from root cuttings. Here's hoping.
Neville Burley:
Dwarf apple rootstocks are easy to grow yourself. Buy a tree that is a dwarf, trim a few roots off the tree (not many and they don't have to be large pieces) on the cut surface put some rooting hormone and plant in a pot. I did this one year and got 100% success as they take easily, then you'll have another three or four dwarf rootstocks ready to go the next year.
