NUTS
1. Goodman’s catalogue of 1914. Goodman’s underlined the ones best suited to the area and though not strictly a Walnut, the Pecan was the only one underlined on their catalogue.
Today many people have questioned if Pecans would actually do well in Gippsland. This suggests that more should be tried in present times. The catalogue used American spelling for words such as color (colour) and flavor (flavour) and this has been retained.

We have been advised at a collection of approx 25 almonds growing in the Goorambat area in the 057 area code. It was thought that virtually all are different and they are in the region of 100 years old. The 25 are what remains of an original plantation of about 50. It is imperative that these are propagated from as soon as possible. If you can assist please contact Neil Barraclough
Almonds can be budded or grafted onto rootstocks of many of the Prunus genus.
Hartman and Kester recommend peach seedlings where irrigation is used and where nematodes are present. Marianna 2624 rootstocks are recommended for heavy, wet soil and where oak root fungi’s (present in Australia?) or root-knot nematode are present. Some varieties of almond are incompatible with this rootstock. Seedling almonds from the local health food shop have been used with success.
HAZELNUTS
Hazelnuts must be propagated by suckers or layering to ensure that the resulting tree is true-to-type. Propagating by seed/nut is not recommended because the resulting tree would be 1/2 parent and 1/2 pollinator. When obtaining trees it is best to make sure that they are true to type otherwise you will have trouble with pollination. As they are wind pollinated plants one pollinator to five cultivars (downwind of June to October prevailing winds).
